Sir Henry Wotton was born in London, on November 17, 1571. He was educated at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he won a fellowship. He was knighted on December 16, 1603, and on January 23, 1607, he was created Master of the Revels. During this period, he was a poet and playwright, but after the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603 he turned to diplomacy
Though Wotton is often called "Sir" Henry Wotton because of his knighthood, his name is actually spelled "Henery."
